Can Hypnosis Help With Creative Block?
By Alex Guldbeck, Certified Hypnotherapist (CHt). Thirteen years in practice, Miami Beach and online. Last reviewed October 2026.
Short answer: Hypnosis can help with creative block, but not by forcing you to produce more. In my experience, a block is usually a part of you that is protecting you from something, and hypnosis is a direct way to meet that part and change your relationship with it, so the work has room to move again. It is not a guaranteed fix, and it works best for people who want to understand why they stopped, not just how to get through tomorrow's to-do list.
This is personal-growth and creative work. It is not medical or mental health care, and I do not diagnose or work with medical or psychological conditions.
What creative block usually is
Most people I work with do not call it "creative block." They say they don't feel like themselves. They look at their supplies and feel nothing. They say the work used to feel like coming home and now feels like a locked door.
They have usually tried the sensible things already. They have read The War of Art, started morning pages, set timers and joined a challenge. Those tools work on effort and understanding. If the block were a shortage of effort or understanding, they would have worked.
What I see instead, again and again, is a part of the person that took on a job a long time ago. Its job might be to keep you from being judged, from finding out whether the work is any good, or from becoming someone your family would not recognize. That part is on your side. It just has not noticed that the situation has changed.
How I work with it
My method is called Inner-World Vision Work. It is guided hypnosis, and it differs from the recorded scripts you may have heard in a few plain ways.
- I don't script my sessions. I listen for the phrase you keep using about the problem, and the session is built from that phrase.
- I go in with you. I experience the journey alongside you rather than reading to you from the outside.
- Nothing is added and nothing is removed. The work does not install new talent or delete old fear. It changes your relationship with what was already inside you.
- Permission does the work, not pressure. You have permission to rest, to drift and to explore at your own pace. The shift comes from seeing something newly, not from trying harder.
- You come back with something. You bring back a place, an image, an object or a phrase that you can return to on your own.
My only agenda is to give you back the keys to the car, and to introduce you to parts of yourself you may have forgotten or locked away.
One real case
This is an excerpt from a case history on this site. The name and details are changed for privacy. It is one person's experience and not a promise of yours.
A recent art school graduate, Jason, was intensely frustrated with life after college, which seemed to lack meaning. Employed by a web agency, he used most of his creative energy doing graphic design for corporate clients during the day, rendering charcoal sketches inspired by H.R. Giger in his free time.
"I don't get it," he complained. "This is what I always wanted to do, but I feel aimless and I'm bored to death! Even my personal artwork is tiresome to me, all of these black and grey aliens and tentacles… I wish I was inspired to try something different!"
Taking that as my cue, I led him through a brief induction and guided him verbally on a canoe trip down a river. "You can just let the river take you, or you can paddle in any direction you want. If you get tired, it's very easy to pull over to the bank and anything you need is right there, waiting for you. This is your river and you have permission to explore it at your own pace."
A month later he called from his new Venice Beach apartment: freelance business taking off, happier than he'd been in a long time. He'd begun experimenting with color in his sketches — branching out from monochrome aliens to watercolors of tourists on the boardwalk.
Notice what did not happen. Nobody told Jason to work harder or try a new medium. He was given permission to explore a river that was already his, and the rest followed from there. You can read the full case history, including the dream he had the next night, in The Uncreative Artist.
What a session is like
A live session with me runs about two hours, in person in Miami Beach or online. You can read a fuller walkthrough on What a Session Is Like.
- A preparation call first. Before the session we have a short call. It is not a sales call. It is the two of us making sure this is the right fit and that I understand what you are bringing in.
- Talking. At the start of the session we talk. I am listening for the phrase that keeps coming back, because that phrase points to where we need to go.
- Induction. I guide you into a relaxed, focused state. You stay aware and you can speak. Nobody can make you do anything you don't want to do.
- The journey. We go into an inner place built from your own words. You see what you see, hear what you hear and feel what you feel. I am in there alongside you.
- The return. I bring you back, and we talk about what you brought with you.
Some people find that one deep session is enough to shift what they came in with, and some come back later for something else. I can't promise how it will go for you.
Honest limits
- Hypnosis with me is not medical or mental health care, and I don't offer it as such. If your block sits alongside depression, anxiety, trauma or a health problem, please see a licensed clinician. Personal-growth work like this can sit beside that care. It does not replace it.
- It is not a productivity hack. If you need to hit a deadline this week, a session is unlikely to be the fastest route.
- It does not work the same for everyone. Some people go deep at once. Others need a little time to trust the process. I can't promise you a particular result, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
- The research is thin. I know of no strong clinical research showing that hypnosis reliably ends creative block. What I can offer is thirteen years of practice and real case histories, told honestly.
- You still have to make the work. A session can change your relationship with the part of you that has been holding you back. The making is still yours, and that is how it should be.

Frequently asked questions
Can hypnosis help with creative block?
It can, for many people, but not by making you produce more. In my experience, a creative block is usually a part of you that is trying to protect you, and hypnosis gives you a direct way to meet that part and change your relationship with it. It is not guaranteed, and it is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
Is hypnosis for creative block the same as a meditation app?
No. Meditation apps mostly help you relax and focus. A live hypnosis session is built from your own words and goes looking for the specific part of you that is holding the block, with a guide alongside you the whole way.
Will I lose control or say things I don't want to?
No. You stay aware, you can speak, and you can stop at any time. Hypnosis is a relaxed and focused state, not sleep, and nobody can make you do anything you don't want to do.
How many sessions will I need?
Some people find that one deep session is enough to shift what they came in with, which is why I offer a single two-hour session rather than a package. Some people return later for something different. I can't promise that one session will be enough for you.
What if I'm not sure I'm really an artist or writer?
You don't need to be. Most of the people I work with say they used to make things and stopped. That counts, and it is exactly the kind of block this work is for.
Can I try it before booking a session?
Yes. The 10-Minute Reset is a free recorded guided hypnosis session for creative block. You can get it at releaseyour.innergeni.us/free.
